Waterfront Development

What is Waterfront Development?

Think about Venice, Cannes, Amsterdam, London Docklands, Cape Town's V&A, Boston or Shanghai. What do they all have in common other than water? They have all become destinations in themselves. From a history of industrial development through decline into derelict 'bad lands' to reinvented, fun places to be and destinations to spend time and money in, waterfronts are, for many cities, the visible symbol of their renewal.

We all love water. And many cities in the UK and abroad are looking to develop their Waterfront areas. We can help.

The redevelopment of old and unused dock areas in port cities and the regeneration of waterfront (including riverside) areas of towns and cities, including coastal towns and resorts is something we are expert in.

Waterfront development often involves the creation of a range of types of mixed-use developments, including retail (increasingly 'experience' retail), commercial, business facilities (including hotels, convention centres and expo exhibition facilities), leisure, recreation, entertainment and sports uses, cultural and heritage uses, and residential in whatever mix is relevant to the development.

This form of development should include the provision of transportation and communications facilities, especially where there is a need to modernise transportation termini and space for water or land-based events and programmes which bring waterfront places alive and attract consumers, for example innovative forms of water taxi and performance areas on pontoons and floating platforms.

What we can do

In response to the desire in the market to create waterfront areas that are really attractive destinations, we have created the team to enable developers and their investors to realise this new form of destination.

The Waterfront Team offers an integrated and coordinated service. Working with clients from research, vision and concept through to completion, letting, ongoing management or sale of the development. The team's services combine, as required:

Market expertise

In the form of destination brand strategy; market positioning advice; detailed destination development specification; value engineering and viability; delivery advice and management.

Destination development management & leadership/innovation

In the form of market analysis, research, development appraisal, planning, valuation, investment, attractor and tenant identification, planning and permitting, project management, letting strategy, licensed and leisure advice, hotel advice, asset management, marketing and communications strategy and overall project management.

Connecting people to the waterfront

Colliers CRE and subsidiary Locum Consulting were the lead sponsor of WaterfrontExpo 2008. Philip Harcourt, Head of Development Consulting, represented us as the event’s Global Partner and used his welcoming address to publicly launch the Waterfront Development Team. Later, Malcolm Allan, gave a presentation titled 'Using Brand Strategy to Connect People to the Waterfront' to delegates.

WaterfrontExpo is an annual conference & exhibition and the only international platform for professionals involved in waterfront projects to analyse and share current thinking and best practice associated with this specialised area. It is the fourth consecutive year that we have assumed lead sponsor status for the event which encompasses waterfront design, regeneration, development, construction and management.
