Councillors back new stadium plans

21/05/2008

Council leaders in St Helens have given the green light for the construction of a new stadium for the town's rugby league team.

The plan, the brainchild of a joint initiative between developers Langtree, supermarket chain Tesco and home builder Taylor Wimpey, will see the 46-acre former United Glass site in the town turned into an 18,000, £25 million stadium and a multi-million Tesco Extra.

Additionally, the current Tesco in St Helens will be converted into other retail outlets and Taylor Wimpey will construct a high-quality residential area as part of a separate plan.

Council leader, Brian Spencer, said the scheme will lead the regeneration of the area, bringing benefits to the townspeople and helping the club.

"The development will bring a range of benefits, not just to our own town but to the region in general, bringing massive investment and jobs," he stated.

St Helens is located midway between Liverpool and Manchester.
